Acute respiratory distress syndrome after an exothermic Baralyme-sevoflurane reaction.

چکیده
ALL modern volatile anesthetics produce carbon monoxide in strongly exothermic reactions with anhydrous carbon dioxide absorbents. Although desflurane produces the most carbon monoxide, the reaction with sevoflurane produces the most heat. Using real anesthesia machines, sevoflurane, and desiccated Baralyme® (Allied Healthcare Products, Inc., St. Louis, MO), peak absorbent canister temperatures of 100–401°C have been documented. In six clinical cases, sevoflurane reacted with dry soda lime to produce hot canisters and, in two of these cases, 4–9% carboxyhemoglobin. We report a sevoflurane reaction with Baralyme® associated with melted absorbent cartridges, thermochemically-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome, and 29% carboxyhemoglobin.

Rhabdomyolysis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Secondary to Multiple Wasp Stings
Background: Wasp stings usually cause local reactions such as itching, urticaria, angioedema and anaphylaxis. Life-threatening complications following multiple wasp stings are relatively rare and unexpected. However, rhabdomyolysis and acute respiratory distress syndrome following wasp stings are possible. Case presentation: A middle-aged male worker was stung by a swarm of wasps all over his b...
متن کاملHypersensitivity Reaction and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Pyrethroid Poisoning and Role of Steroid Therapy
Background: Pyrethroids are generally of low toxicity to humans, but in suicidal poisonings which are usually associated with ingestion of high doses, they lead to severe systemic effects. Case Report: A 30-year old woman presented to emergency department with a history of intentional ingestion of about 15 mL of prallethrin around 3 days earlier. She complained of shortness of breath along with...

متن کاملAcute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in a Patient With Suspected Influenza: A Case Report
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a clinical syndrome consisting of tachypnea, refractory hypoxemia, and diffuse opacities on chest radiographs after infection or trauma which ultimately leads to respiratory failure. The principles of treatment are based on patient care in ICU, mechanical ventilation and medical treatments. By using lower plateau, less tidal volume, higher positive ...
متن کاملValidity of Spo2/Fio2 Ratio in Detection of Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Introduction: One ofdiagnostic criteria for Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome is pao2/fio2 (PF) ratio 300 for ALI or 200 for ARDS. This criteria requires invasive arterial sampling. Measurement of Spo2/Fio2 (SF) ratio by pulseoximetry may be a reliable non invasive alternative to the PF ratio. Methods and Materials: In a cross sectional study we enrolled 105 sample o...
